Competition CANCELLED & RESCHEDULED

Updated: Dec 9, 2025

Dear Ohana,

Thank you for your trust in us as stewards of your children's personal growth, self-defense, and martial arts training.

Competition is not for everyone. HOWEVER, the idea of competition is important for everyone.

Registration is closed for the upcoming competition on Saturday 12/13. Nevertheless, I suggest that you and your children come to watch at least some of it.

We will have at least 2 students competing.

WHY WATCH?

Self-defense situations sometimes feel like they may never happen. Competitions make it very real and immediate. This helps students focus more during class time, and improves their rate of both technical and personal growth.

If you come right at the beginning, or towards the end around 11am, you're likely to find the best spots to watch.

It's in Pukalani, in the Foodland shopping center, two doors down from Foodland. It's free to watch.

FREE CLASSES NEXT WEEK - FOR SERIOUS STUDENTS - TEXT TO CONFIRM

Next Tuesday Dec 9th @ 6pm, and Next Tuesday Dec 16th @ 6pm, we will have 30 mins of strength and conditioning available followed by 30 mins of free training time available for students who are serious about their training and who may want to compete someday.

Please text us to let us know you're coming. If no one texts, we won't hold these classes. 808.400.4185

Please have your child bring a pen and notebook.

SHOULD YOUR CHILD COMPETE?

Text us if you'd like to be notified as soon as registration opens for the next competition. It may open as soon as mid December! 808-400-4185

Keep in mind that Jiu-Jitsu is a big deal across this island, and that it is common for competition-focused students at other schools to train 4+ times per week, sometimes up to 8 times per week (!). They do this, in many cases, while focusing exclusively on sport jiu-jitsu.

At our academy, we focus on helping students develop their character, and their mindfulness and self-regulation abilities alongside their self-defense and sport jiu-jitsu skills.

That said, if your child has a competitive spirit, is training at least 2x/week, and has received at least a couple red stripes on their White Belt, we encourage them to consider competing.

Please reach out if you would like your child to train more times per week. Ask us about our big discounts available when training 2x, 3x, or 4x per week. 808-400-4185

COMPETITION RULES

There are multiple different rule sets. Most competitions use the IBJJF rule set.

The competitions in Pukalani, thus far, have used the IBJJF rule set.

For the upcoming competition, they will use the Jiu Jitsu World League rule set,

IN-HOUSE COMPETITIONS

We once hosted an in-house competition we called The Samurai Games. I am looking forward to hosting it again soon. I am planning to use a similar but hyper simple rule-set which prioritizes students' safety and engagement, and which I can wholeheartedly recommend to all our students.

Aloha,

Coach Gabe
