October Updates: What We're Learning; New WhatsApp Community & More

This month at Mindful Martial Arts, we’re continuing to build the foundations of both technique and mindset. The curriculum is designed to develop physical skills, emotional resilience, and mindfulness—core aspects that our students will carry with them beyond the mat. Here's a peek into what we've been focusing on this month broken down by age group.

Technical Skills

Mat Chat & Mindfulness

Mini Ninjas (4-6yrs)

Mini Ninjas have been working on Passing Open Guard, and  Maintaining Mount. We practiced LIVE TRAINING for the first time for many Mini Ninjas this month, which means they practiced in their own time, bringing together various techniques they have been learning.

Highlight: “Calm Down Time” book. Supporting students to think about what they do, where they can go, and who they can talk to, to support themselves to calm down.

Samurai Squad (6-12yrs)

Covering basics of opening the Closed Guard using The Standing Guard Pass, and getting to the Headquarters Position

How to take advantage when your opponent does The Guard Pass wrong by using The Double Ankle Grab Sweep.

Healthy Habits Discussions this month included Eating Right and Pushing Through Fear with Support. These values were highlighted in our story-time and discussions this month.

Our Mindfulness Practice continued to be a focus on Single-Pointed Concentration and Mindfulness of Body Sensation & Sound, with some discussion of how these foundational practices set the groundwork for deeper practice.

Mindful Warriors (9-17yrs)

Moving beyond the high-level X-Guard-Pass, and Knee-on-belly, from last month, this month students are delving into the details of the advanced Same-Side-One-Leg-Over Armbar, and the Spinning-Cross-Side-One-Leg-Over-Armbar (which is a real beauty to see and do).

We’re tightening up the precision with how they are being encouraged to pass from Side-Control to Mount, and will be reviewing and tightening up their S-Mount Armbar as well.

We’ve focused on Pain this month, and how mindfulness practice can support us to identify pain, connect with it in order to receive its message, take action as necessary, and then disconnect with it as is appropriate.

Sometimes, we need to push through pain to get to where we want to go. This is often the case with the goals that matter to us most and which are hardest to achieve.

By gaining control of our mind, we gain control of our future.

New WhatsApp Community!

Finally, a social media solution for our MiMA Ohana! Join our WhatsApp Community to share photos and videos with other members, to talk about classes, lost and found, ride shares, passing down Gi’s that have been grown out of, and all the other things a community needs to be able to chat about. THIS IS WHERE WE’LL BE SHARING PHOTOS WE TAKE AS WELL.

Check your email and start seeing photos, videos and more!

New Water Bottle Policy

At Mindful Martial Arts, we're committed to promoting health, sustainability, and powerfully effective classes.

When students forget their water bottles, it leads to valuable lost time while students wait for the (relatively slow) water dispenser, and while the rest of the class waits for them. We also don't have the capacity to clean and wash cups and would like to cut down on paper-cup waste.

From now on, If a child forgets to bring a bottle, we'll provide one of our reusable, pre-filled 23.9 fl oz plastic water bottles at no charge. The first bottle is complimentary, but after that, an automatic $3 charge will be applied for each additional bottle.

Please remember to make sure to use your own bottle or vessel for water. Let's work together to stay hydrated and reduce waste! Thank you for your kokua!
