Mindful Samurai Jiu-Jitsu
Jiu-jitsu for self-defense
Mindful Samurai Jiu-Jitsu is a rule set designed to be safer and more self-defense oriented.
It rewards jiu-jitsu we want kids to be able to use responsibly for real-life self-defense.
Note to Coaches & Local Academies: This rule set is a work in progress. Thank you for helping us test, refine, and shape it through live community participation.

"If they can touch your face when you're grappling, you're doing it wrong."
Main Ideas
We reward control, not damage.
Students must protect their head and face.
Pulling guard is not good self-defense.
Rules of The Game
Matches always last a full 3 minutes and are won by points.
Submission control gives big points.
Gaining Top Position
Getting on top is good self-defense.
It is rewarded any time a student gains top position from a bottom or neutral position.
This includes from Standing (takedown), Guard Bottom (sweep), Half-Guard Bottom, Side-Control Bottom, Mount Bottom etc.
You don't have to clear the guard to get top position points.
Pulling Guard
Guard pulling is allowed, but discouraged. If a student pulls guard, sits down, or gives up top position, the other student earns 2 points for gaining top position.
